These images are from “words + pictures”, a mixed media series (bitumen, coffee, charcoal, and polymer). This
is a visual response to daily words that have appeared in the 2017 New York Times describing the Presidency.
The words are the titles.
The core of the work was done at Foundation OBRAS Artist Residency, Estremoz, Portugal, Fall 2017. Nine 24"
x 24" luan plywood panels with my formulated ground and a coat of bitumen were brought to OBRAS as
checked luggage. The materials are basic and sparse. This work is considered “Arte Povera”, making choices and
methods more simplistic and primitive utilizing metaphors, abstractions and symbols. The mix of global digital news
media and rustic hand-made imagery has a compelling juxtaposition.
