red cardinal mama

In a time of noise, uncertainty, and chaos, a little red cardinal has crafted an artistically perfect nest out of Spanish moss and twigs just outside our dining room window in a dwarf tree. She has a gorgeous vermillion beak and big dark soulful eyes and stylish upright tailfeathers. She is guarding her precious little blue egg with determination and courage.

Next door a new oversized house is being thrown up. Of course this is being built with noise polluting whap whap whap nail guns, screeching roofers, tossed banging plywood, staccato yelling, dumpsters, and groaningly loud trucks backing up with their annoying beep beep beep.

Meanwhile this peaceful little tough bird mama is four feet off the ground in her homemade nest just slightly below human eye level. She is situated near our wooden creaky, garden gate with it’s noisy latch. She looks up tentatively every time somebody enters and exits. Fiercely protective and incredibly brave. On this particular day I only wish I could appropriate her brand of bravery. I am humbled by her.
